Guide on how to deal with cloud pool & hot tub water

How to clear cloudy pool water

Follow these steps in order to identify the cause, restore water balance and help your filtration system remove the cloudiness.

  1. Test the water

Check the free chlorine and pH levels before adding any treatment.

  2. CHECK THE FILTRATION

Empty the pump and skimmer baskets. Clean or backwash the filter and check that the water is circulating correctly.

  3. ADJUST THE PH

Bring the pH into the recommended range shown on your testing kit and product label. Balanced pH helps chlorine work effectively.

  4. BRUSH AND VACUUM

Brush the pool walls, steps and floor to loosen dirt, fine debris and any early algae growth. Vacuum away settled material.

  5. APPLY SHOCK CHLORINE

If chlorine is low or the water has been heavily used or contaminated, apply Shock Granules according to the product label.

  6. RUN THE FILTER AND RETEST

Keep the water circulating while it clears. Clean the filter again if necessary and retest the water before swimming.

Never mix different pool chemicals together. Add each product separately and always follow the instructions on the product label.

Treatment timeline

HOW LONG DOES CLOUDY POOL WATER TAKE TO CLEAR?

Clearing time depends on the cause of the cloudiness, the condition of the filter and how quickly the water balance is corrected.

  • 12 to 24 hours

    LIGHT CLOUDINESS

Light haze may begin to improve after balancing the water, cleaning the filter and restoring circulation. Continue filtering and retest the water.

  • 24 to 48 hours

    MODERATE CLOUDINESS

Water affected by low chlorine, heavy use or suspended debris may require one to two days of filtration after treatment.

  • 2 to 3 days or longer

    PERSISTENT CLOUDINESS

If the water remains cloudy, retest the pH and chlorine, clean the filter again and inspect the circulation system. Do not repeatedly add shock chlorine without testing first.

CLEAR WATER ALL SEASON

KEEP CLOUDY WATER FROM COMING BACK

  • Maintain Chlorine and pH Keep water within the recommended levels shown on your testing kit. 2–3× WEEKLY
  • Keep the Filter Clean Clean or backwash the filter when required so it can continue removing debris. WEEKLY / AS NEEDED
  • Run the Circulation System Operate the pump long enough to circulate and filter the full pool volume. DAILY
